Mystery Rosy Slime on Isolated Tasmanian Coast Prompts Fears of Possible Algae Outbreak

Authorities in the island state are working to identify a rosy sludge that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with certain experts worried it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.

Broad Occurrence Across Shore

The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a stretch of Randalls Bay about 60km south of Hobart. A like substance has also been recorded on sections of Little Roaring Beach and a separate bay.

Samples Gathered for Testing

Examples have been taken and sent to the regulatory body for analysis. A official commented that "algae outbreaks are a natural occurrence in response to shifts in minerals, temperature, rain or light".

"They are occasionally called crimson or rosy tides because the blooms can turn the water red," the spokesperson added. "Not all phytoplankton events are toxic, with numerous types acting as a key source of nourishment for marine life in the marine food web."

"The usual source of red tides in local waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce glowing light shows at night."

Previous Catastrophic Outbreak in another region

A southern state not long ago confronted a severe phytoplankton proliferation along its southern shore after a string of oceanic warm spells, which expanded across an extensive zone. The outbreak resulted in beachgoers with sore eyes and severe coughing and may have caused the death of up to 250,000 marine animals across 400 different species, according to official estimates.

Scientist Assessment on the Tasmanian Event

An estuarine ecologist, who assisted in examining the onset of South Australia's algal bloom commented, based on pictures of the Tasmanian outbreak, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a kind of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".

"We have seen lots of these outbreaks around Tasmania of late," she said.

The scientist stated the algae did not create poisons comparable to the type involved in South Australia's severe algal bloom, but it does eat microscopic animals and "lots of fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were in greatest danger.

"You usually see a outbreak of sea sparkle after a bloom of another organism, or something like a marine breeding," she added.

Calls for Response and Community Health

A campaigner, who took samples of the rosy slime in the state, stated it appeared the suspected bloom had "expanded greatly" and suggested the aquaculture sector was the primary suspect, referring to similar cases elsewhere.

"So Tasmania needs to send a clear message here, the officials and the EPA need to act to this. We need to examine the examples we've gathered and we need to put word out the public here," she stated.

An environmental foundation has reported dead octopus and deceased marine life appearing on the coast, with a veteran activist describing the circumstances as an "environmental emergency" and calling on the state premier to see and "lead the response that authorities must be doing".

Talking with the media, the official said he was did not know of any links between the event and the aquaculture sector, stating expert examination was needed before judgments could be drawn.
